The Visceral Fat Problem
The primary issue with BMI is that it fails to distinguish where your body stores fat. Fat stored under the skin (subcutaneous fat) is relatively harmless. However, fat stored around your internal organs in the abdominal cavity (visceral fat) is highly active metabolically, secreting inflammatory cytokines that increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.
The Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) Rule
The WHtR is simple: keep your waist circumference to less than half your height. Mathematically, this means maintaining a ratio of 0.50 or lower.
- Under 0.40: Underweight (extremely lean).
- 0.40 to 0.49: Healthy (low risk).
- 0.50 to 0.59: Increased risk (abdominal obesity).
- 0.60+: High risk (severe visceral fat accumulation).
