The Best Ways to Measure Body Fat Percentage at Home
Unlike scale weight, which fluctuates with water levels and glycogen, your body fat percentage isolates adipose tissue from muscle, bone, and organs. You can estimate your body composition easily using our free Body Fat Calculator.
Why Track Body Fat Instead of Weight?
Scale weight alone does not tell you if you are losing fat or losing muscle. During a weight loss phase, your objective is to preserve as much skeletal muscle as possible while burning stored body fat. Preserving muscle keeps your metabolic rate high, preventing weight rebounds.
Method 1: The US Navy Tape Measure Method
Used by the military for decades, this method requires only a flexible, non-stretch measuring tape. It relies on circular measurements to estimate body volume:
- Males: Measure neck circumference (just below larynx) and abdomen circumference (at the navel level).
- Females: Measure neck, waist (narrowest point), and hips (widest point of glutes).
This method is surprisingly accurate, usually within 3% to 4% of a clinical DEXA scan.
Method 2: Skinfold Calipers
This technique uses spring-loaded calipers to measure the thickness of subcutaneous fat pinches at specific sites (typically 3-site or 7-site models, such as chest, abdomen, thigh, and suprailiac). While calipers can be highly consistent, their accuracy depends heavily on the skill of the person taking the measurements.
Method 3: Bioelectrical Impedance (Smart Scales)
Smart scales send a weak electrical current through your feet to measure resistance. Because muscle is water-rich and conducts electricity better than fat, the scale estimates body composition. However, these scales are notoriously inconsistent, as readings shift with hydration, meal timing, and sweat levels.
